Kirklees - Sentencing Remarks

Description

This Kirklees grooming gang case involved two men - Khuram Raziq and Nasar Hussain - who systematically raped a vulnerable girl beginning when she was just 12 years old, with Raziq convicted of at least 12 rapes over about a year and Hussain convicted of at least 12 rapes over six to seven months. Before the abuse, the victim was a happy child doing well at school but was deliberately targeted at age 12 and groomed through offers of alcohol, cannabis, and cigarettes, leading her to go missing from home and truant from school. Khuram Raziq was 21 and working as a pizza driver when he met her, taking her out in his vehicle late at night and providing alcohol and cannabis to groom her for sex - he took her virginity in an alley whilst she leant against a wall, and it hurt and she bled. The victim was so brainwashed that she believed each man was her boyfriend, explaining: "I thought that people, these guys, cared. Like they cared more than your family... these guys were best for you." In reality, she was simply used for sexual gratification in sordid circumstances, up against walls or in cars. Even after being found by police with cannabis in Raziq's car and him being released on bail, he continued to meet and rape her. Nasar Hussain was 26 or 27 and a taxi driver who had previously been having sex with another underage girl who then introduced him to the victim, with the victim describing herself as "fresh meat" and "a new toy to play with." The victim was so damaged that even during the initial police interview she still believed the men had affection for her and refused to engage with prosecution. The judge noted she had suffered severe psychological harm with little prospect of full recovery, whilst commending her extraordinary courage in enduring the trial.
