Kirklees - Sentencing Remarks

Description

This Kirklees/Dewsbury grooming gang case involved three brothers from the Qayum family - Zafar, Ansar, and Mohammed Jabar - who systematically raped and sexually abused three vulnerable girls aged 13 to 17 between 1999 and the early 2000s. The victims were targeted and groomed through offers of alcohol, drugs, and a more exciting lifestyle with insincere compliments to make them feel special. Zafar Qayum was the primary perpetrator who controlled and abused one victim so severely over years that she believed she was in a genuinely loving relationship despite his violence, when in reality he repeatedly raped her, forced degrading sexual acts, and used her for his own gratification - when their "relationship" ended, he destroyed her entire flat in revenge, even cutting out the crotch of her underwear. Zafar also facilitated the rape of victims by his brothers and unknown men, taking one girl to a snooker club where multiple men raped and degraded her in his car, with the judge describing his conduct as "cruel and inhuman" and saying he had "plumbed the depths of depravity." Ansar Qayum participated in grooming by providing alcohol and drugs before repeatedly committing both vaginal and anal rape against two victims, described as "nasty" by those he abused. Mohammed Jabar Qayum was considered "the best of a bad bunch" but still repeatedly raped one victim despite being somewhat under the influence of his brothers. The abuse only came to light years later when one victim saw the documentary "Three Girls" and realised she could still report what happened.
