Description
This Rotherham grooming gang case involved six men who sexually exploited two vulnerable girls in the Rotherham area between 1999 and 2001. The primary victim was just 12 years old when five of the defendants systematically abused her - she had been groomed to such an extent that she believed the abuse was normal and felt like a prostitute. The men plied her with alcohol and drugs, with one defendant (Amjad Ali) making her pregnant through rape when she was so intoxicated she couldn't remember the assault. The Dad brothers were particularly predatory: Basharat and Nasar Dad raped the 12-year-old at a squalid flat above their family's firework shop, with Nasar forcing her to perform oral sex before they locked her in the flat overnight without food, water, or electricity. Basharat Dad also conducted a sustained campaign of rape against a second 14-year-old victim over two months, repeatedly assaulting her in rooms above the shop and at another flat, sometimes when she was unconscious from drugs and alcohol. The other defendants - Matloob Hussain and Mohammed Sadiq - similarly befriended and raped the 12-year-old victim, pretending to be her boyfriend or protector. When police first interviewed the primary victim in 2001 after discovering her pregnancy, she was too ashamed and embarrassed to reveal the full extent of her abuse. It wasn't until 2014 that both victims courageously came forward to give evidence, enduring the trauma of trial to help protect other children from similar exploitation.
